Crossing Muddy Waters find John Hiatt in peak shape as one of America's finest songwriters. Hiatt has made Crossing Muddy Waters a strictly acoustic album which is not really suprising as his last few albums on Capital were a little lacklustre. Hiatt seems to have found himself here with the 11 newly crafted songs which could arguably be considered his best yet. John's friends, Davey Faragher and David Immergluck, who are both multi-instrumentalists are pretty much all the help that he gets here. This is another great project that Hiatt and company pulled off in less than a week in his home studio. If I had to pick a favorite off of this career highlight album it would have to be the title track. His heart gets revealed here and the mandolin and guitar (which are the primary instruments throughout the album) are at their best. You might actually set aside your copy of Bring The Family or Slow Turning in favour of this well thought out album.
