I always loved Australia, for the simple fact that to them bands like AC/DC and The Birthday Party are their Beatles and Aerosmith. A country that loves brutal music and beer is nothing short of Eden. Seems though, that New Zealand is no slouch in taking national pride in music that bludgeons you into jello. NZ noise bands have made a splash in the last couple of years, and Pig Exam might be the best of the lot. PE is actually one, Loren Clements, just makes grooves that hurt, make that HURT, metallic and torturous noise like a rubber mallet to the balls. There is no twiddling of the volume controls here; this is all noise all the time, relentless and fuck you if you didn’t ask to be born into a world of hurt. I don’t’ get it, but I love it. Sun, beer, no political influence whatsoever so no wars; imagine if the Aussies and Kiwis ever got ahold of the global wheel for a spell; there’d be none of us left.
