Throw away all concepts that you have about Appleseed Cast. Yes, even that amazing Mare Vitalis you must ignore and come to this double album with a fresh look and an open mind. This review is going to be focused around Volume 2 of the double album Low Level Owl. According to the tear sheet that came with the release, the first song "View of a Burning City" is the end to the last track on Volume 1. These albums and concepts are that tightly knit. Most of the songs start out simply and build into a louder and fuller climax. The vocals are droning but end up being very hypnotic. There is a very obvious maturation process that Appleseed Cast has gone through and Low Level Owl proves that it is not a bad thing. There is much studio experimentation going on here too. The band tries out loops, echoes, inverting tapes and speeding up and slowing down the tapes. It provides a thoroughly invigorating listen that shows Appleseed Cast are a band that will be recognized outside of its indie roots.
