C.o.m.a - Ornamental Urban Shrubbery
The California Outside Music Associates return as a trio, this time featuring cellist and bassist Zone, and regular sax/theremin player John Vaughn. Percussionist Dax Compise provides both funky and restrained backup to the otherwise outré explorations.
That combination of improv and the tight structures of blues and jazz provide form to both play inside and out of, as the complexity of "Gort, Klattu Barrata Niktoe" and "Fire-eating Duelist" attest. "Diacoustical Muzzle" is a tour de force of both in and out. Coma get a lot of love as an expansive, fun and daring collective, and this release backs it all up. There is so much room to explore various tonal colors and to squeeze the sublime out of the instrumental interplay, that the trio creates off a palette suitable for a larger ensemble.
