Monarch! - Deadmen Tell No Tales
One never thinks of the French when it comes to good, sludge-metal, or, really, any good music. But it makes sense that there would come from that country a band as hard and drone-y as Monarch, given it history of literature that has obsessed on the gloomy and extreme. This set contains two CD’s: "Die Tonight," their latest, and an out of print release, "Speak of the Sea." The new disc contains three long and heavy slabs of murk and mire, with the epic "We Are the Music Makers" being the highlight. The second disc features two songs; both "Swan Song" and "Winter Night" fill more psychic space than a 20 track record. The crust is thickened by Emilie’s melodic growl, one of the most fierce in the genre. The Melvins-type humor doesn’t hurt, either. Forgive the French, love the doom, cherish Monarch!
