This former member of Wallflowers and Buckcherry has been getting a lot of good hype for this release. Reviewers have been falling over themselves to praise Yogi’s songwriting and smart, even deep, pop sensibilities. I don’t see much in the way of the visionary here; rather, most of the songs come across as self-absorbed, the lyrics of a high schooler just digging the idea that calling himself a poet is working with the ladies.
Take "Second Does," for example. The dose in question is the seventh helping of "cherry-flavored you." Other lyrics, in "Inside You," for instance, try to make the mundane sound profound. Didn’t we learn from the days of Donovan that clever does not equal deep? There is so much of an aura of "importance surrounding the compositions and grave, bardic delivery of the lyrics, that are is clear that Yogi wants this record, as well as himself, to be seen as MAJOR. Aims for Nick Drake or Pajo; stops at Billy Joel or Neil Diamond.
