Nick Cave is a genius. But you knew that. Grinderman=Nick Cave (which in turn = genius). This album may as well be a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album because most of the Bad Seeds are here: Martyn Casey, Warren Ellis and Jim Sclavunos. The approach to Grinderman was a little different. Instead of Cave writing the material and bringing it to the musicians, they sat down together and wrote the songs as a group. It's a little angrier and more aggressive than Nick's other material, bordering on the tension that was present for the Birthday Party.
The album starts out strong with "Get It On" ("I've got to get up to get down and start all over again..."). Then the fire on all cylinders with their first "single", "No Pussy Blues", a damn hot song that ranks among the best that Cave has been involved with. Then I totally love the slow grind of "Electric Alice". Probably the most haunting song I've heard this year. "Depth Charge Ethel" should be a Jon Spencer track. Awesome! I think this thing is going to be a classic in a couple years.
Needless to say, if you are a Cave fan, you will like Grinderman. This is an amazing effort from all involved.
