Drone funk, trip-hop, ambient, whatever you want to call it, all of it is dance music for the brain and the ass, and Nublu offers a silky set of mixes designed to stimulate the cerebral and the feral.
Comprised of session-men who have worked with the likes of Tom Waits and Herbie Hancock, and gathered by label impresario Ilhan Ersahin and, as the title says, conducted by legendary free jazz artist Morris, this set utilizes Morris’ patented concept of "Conduction" which involves improvs that unite musicians from different styles and backgrounds, regardless of skill level.
This kind of soulful crapshoot pays off big time here, as this approach mixes with Nublu’s New York attitude and remixing to create a solid sonic bond in more ways than one.
Just listening to tracks like "Sketches of NYC" and "Steppin On Toes" and you can sense and revel in the union of solid playing and risk-taking that emerges from the collaboration. Controlled chaos it is, but these 12 tracks form a seamless groove that clearly fires up the players, producers, their conductor, and you, unless you miss out.
