AM/FM - The Sky Is The New Ground
It’s just not fair. Releasing a teaser EP with only 4 songs and one of them, “Every Start, is an instrumental. That’s exactly what AM/FM decide to do with The Sky is the New Ground. They are filling space until their next album is ready to go. It would be hard for AM/FM to come close to their Getting Into Sinking album but this little EP hints at some fine things that will be coming. While it’s not likely that newbies will be running out to pick up New Ground but I would recommend that anyone familiar with the band go to their favorite record store to get a copy. The songs are so understated, as AM/FM does so nicely. Brian Sokel and his crew start out with a beautiful instrumental called “Every Start. “Gone In Three is the next track, which is probably the EPs most energetic track. “Mrs. Astronaut gets my vote for best song on the EP. The guys borrow some cues from labelmate Matt Pond PA for some of the arrangements but Brian’s vocals are even quieter than Matt’s. Flaming Lips comparisons creep in from time to time but AM/FM is about as original as they come. I look forward to their next full-length album.
