Amon Tobin and friends are back with the 2003 release Verbal Remixes and Collaborations.  I was excited to receive this album based on the promising line-up of collaborators and remix artists.  Some big names in electronica were featured in this album including Kid Koala, Bonobo, Prefuse 73, and Boom Bip among others.  With a line-up like this, there surely couldn't be anything wrong with Verbal Remixes and Collaborations.  I was rewarded for my optimism with a well developed album.

The first half of Verbal Remixes and Collaborations are the Collaborations.  A couple songs were disappointing such as "I'll Have the Waldorf Salad (feat. Bonobo)" and "Ten Pierce Metric Wrench Set (feat. Steinski)" which seemed to carry with them the monotony of dull and over-used samples.  Tracks like "Hot Korean Moms (feat. P-Love)" completely redeemed the collaborations though.  This track, though it had very few examples of an actual melody, featured just enough melody that it seemed cryptic.  It sounded like a vinyl version of "Bloodstone" from Amon Tobin's Foley Room.  The remaining half of the album are the remixes of Amon Tobin's "Verbal" from Out From Out Where. The original track is  a fast-paced track sampling what sounds like the nonsensical ramblings of someone put on a high speed rewind.  In my opinion, the best track of the album is featured within this section in Boom Bip's remix, "Verbal (Boom bip mix)."  The track offers a slower feel to a fast-paced song and incorporates a solemn progression over the vocal sample of the original track that really makes the track stand out.

Verbal Remixes and Collaborations is a must have among not only your Amon Tobin collection, but your electronic collection in general.  Amon Tobin truly picked an unmatched line up which helped him to create one of his best releases.
