The bio that came with Emmure's Goodbye To The Gallows flags this as "The Hardest album of 2007". Oh, is Slayer not putting an album out? No Daughters release this year? Anyway, Emmure is pretty damn heavy and they want you to know it. This is a good debut album for Victory. It's not perfect but rarely is a debut.

The album opens up with the intro "A Ticket For The Paralyzer". Consider this as a sort of primer. If you make it through you might be ready for the bludgeoning "10 Signs You Should Leave", easily the best song on Gallows. "When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong" is good but it doesn't stand out. It sounds like the typical metal-core you might hear with Between The Buried and Me or even Misery Index, two great bands to be compared to but the uniqueness seems to dwindle at this point in time. This kind of happens on "Rusted over wet dreams" as well. A style that really just sounds too familiar.

Some of the tracks don't work at all, such as "Sleeping Princess In Devil's Castle". It wants to get going but never does. It's like they just can't find the throttle and scream and shout because of it. And a quick way to lose me is to do a two minute samplefest of a heart beat and someone raking leaves ("Travis Bickle"), a complete waste of time.

So do have some compassion towards these kids. They are new here and they are trying to do something heavy. Now they just need to work on carving out their own sound a little more. It's fine to have influences but don't recreate your influences music. This is a quick way to end your career. Watch for Emmure's sophomore album to hopefully change this up a bit.
