Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout have definitely come to an agreement that their collaborations are successful. Last year they released an Airport 5 CD and it was the first time they had worked together since Guided By Voices in 1996. Tobin looks after the instrumentation at his home studio while Robert enters a studio to lay down some lovely vocal tracks. When you first listen to Airport 5 you are brought back to a time when GBV was a little more experimental and off the cuff. Life Starts Here is a bit of a darker venture but there is still the lovely melodies and harmonies that you have come to enjoy when these two get together. There’s nothing quite as instantly catchy as Isolation Drill’s “Glad Girls but the experimentation is back. For people that have felt GBV might have swayed since Tobin Sprout’s departure you will definitely take full enjoyment away with Airport 5. It is a fine album designed to be listened with a close friend late on a Friday evening. Pollard will never wear of writing very interesting and enjoyable music.
