This album is the Whigs career highlight. One of those albums that is just impossible to top. Not that any of their other albums aren't great, (1998's "1965" was a superb album) but Gentlemen is one of those times when everything falls into place perfectly and the takes are flawless. The emotion captured on Gentlemen is one that is hard to harness. Bordering on out of control at times while at others they are quite content with whispy lyrics. The album just fits together too. It's almost as if you have to start at the beginning every time and you can't stop until the entire story is over. The relationship struggle is the main subject throughout. Mention must be made about the clever album graphics as well with the depressed boy sitting on a bed. It doesn't get much better than this.
