This second collaboration between tenor and percussion geniuses is pretty generous in the space it gives to the rest of the band to explore. Particularly impressive is guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Josh Abrams, who plays the guimbri, a three string Moroccan bass to great effect on “Sakti/Shiva.” Tracks range, as is typical for both artists, from the spiritual (“For Brother Thompson,”) to the blues (“Strut Time”), with a little craziness in between. “Planet E” and the cello driven “From the River To The Ocean” allow both Anderson and Drake to explore their instruments, while also giving room for the band, esp. bassist/cellist Harrison Bankhead.
Two masters let in a few friends to help create a well-rounded, sweet, and hardcore exploration of the sound and the fury.
