I had a hard time with this review. I had a hard time with Dalek's previous album, Absence, but in the end Absence ended up being one of my favorite albums of 2004. Abandoned Language is Dalek's new album and the thing I'm having a hard time with is the opposite reason why I had a hard time liking Absence. Absence's samples and music was almost too much to take. It was a wall of noise, white noise, musical noise and a whole bunch of other shit that made me angry the first 5 times I heard the album. On Abandoned Language the crew decides to make it less abrasive. And that's what I'm having a hard time with. If you are just getting into these guys then this would be the album to start with. There are moments that I am reminded of Boards Of Canada but while listenable it just didn't sound right. I have come to accept that Dalek is looking to change as well and have come to terms with their new sound. The rhymes on Abandoned Language are great though. I think songs like "Isolated Stare" show Dalek now as much more than just an avant garde hip hop sound. They've moved into atmospheric and moody electronic music as well. I still feel that Dalek needs to be heard before any judgment can be made.

In the end, Abandoned Language is a decent album. It isn't as far out there as it's predecessor but even then it is very left-field. Check it out, if you dare.
