Anberlin's third release from Tooth And Nail. Cities was a long awaited release by these young rock stars. Afer two years and videos teasing all of their dedicated fans, Anberlin let Cities out upon the world. Only time would tell if the world would accept the new musical direction that Anberlin had taken with their new music. Surprisingly, Cities does not disappoint much, but it does sound a lot more different in sound. Anberlin has gone to the popier sound of music this time around, which is a compleley differnt direction of their last album.
Cities starts out with ambient sounds of the streets, and then breaks into Godspeed. After Godspeed is where the new popier sound of Anberlin comes into play. The song Adelaide is about as poppy of a song than ever, but it's just so catchy that you cannot help but to like it. It's the type of song that makes you want to sing along with, so catchy that you will know the lyrics of at least the chorus before the end of the song. The slower song of the album, The Unwinding Cable Car, is a great song. The acoustic guitar take over the song and Stephen Christians vocals are amazing. The vocals are perfect for the song, and when everything in the song is pulled together it forms something beautiful. Dismantle. Repair. is possibly the best song of the album. The lyrics are brilliant and the vocal stylings are very well placed. It is a great track on the album.
There are some songs that I could do without. Songs like Inevitable and Alexithymia are good, but I think the album would do just as well without it. They would be better off as just bonus tracks you could download on the internet.
Cities is not a bad album, but it's not as great as everyone would hope it would be. There are promising tracks on the album, but for every promising track Anberlin delivers, there is a disappointing one. Cities is almost average, but a little bit above that level.

I didn't know what to expect with this new Anberlin release. But when I picked it up on release day, I was happy my boys didn't let me down. The album seems more religion based, with christian lyrics within songs. But just because there are religious themes in songs, doesn't mean you should count the band out from the get go. This is a good album. Starting the album off is the track (debut) which is just a collaboration of street sounds. Then an explosion of music comes from the second track and first single, Godspeed. And right after the single ends, upbeat track, Adelaide comes on. You want to sing along to Adelaide so badly upon hearing it. When you hear 'The Unwinding Cable Car' you'll either smile at how beautiful it sounds, or you'll just listen and nod your head to the beat. The chorus is brilliant, and is proof of the religious lyrics previously stated. 'This is the correlation, of salvation and love. don't drop your arms. don't drop your arms, I'll guard your heart. With quiet words I'll lead you in.' That was also my example of the beautiful lyrics. But yes, if you like Mae or emery, then pick up this new release by Anberlin.
