M(US)IC, also known as "Us In Music" is the 10 song debut album from Buffalo, NY's Damiera. The album was originally out on Tamerlaine Records, but is now getting blanket coverage from the trendsetting Equal Vision. Damiera is a band that looks beyond lyrics and engages the whole band in the wonderful mix of complicated guitar lines and fun rhythms. You might throw this into the emo category but it could also fit into a prog-rock genre as well with the absolutely brilliant guitar playing.
Does it work? Well, I really wanted to like Damiera's debut but in the end it fell short. The guys in the band really are great musicians but I couldn't help but feel that they were missing the necessary hooks to pull me in further. In this day and age where so many bands are coming out in this post-punk/post-hardcore sound you can't afford this.
The album opens up fairly strong with "Immure". It clips along fairly fast but doesn't attempt any speed records. This song really reminds me of Burning Airlines. But then they follow it up with a song that sounds too much like the first, "Lessons". The title track is next and again, it feels like the first two. See where I'm going here? If you had this as an EP it would have gone down quite nicely but as a full-length I'm left a little disappointed.
