The Bird and the Bee is a new pop duo that Metro Blue, subsidiary of Blue Note, has just picked up. The LA Times declared The Bird and the Bee one of the "10 Bands on the Horizon for 2007". Do you need to pay attention? Well, hear me out on this one. This is an interesting project. Greg Kurstin is a keyboardist and producer that has worked with Beck, amongst others. The lovely voice is provided by Inara George, daughter of Little Feat's Lowell George. Together they bring us quite a diverse self-titled album. At times, the songs are very upbeat, and others, downright spooky ("Spark"). These are the two ends of the spectrum, but throughout the entire album Inara keeps us interested with her impressionable voice.

The album opens with one of the best tracks on the album, "Again & Again". It has keyboards in it but its the repetitive guitar riff that takes us through the majority of the song. Nice and upbeat. I'm not sure how attracted I would be to someone screaming at me "Would you ever be my, would you be my fucking boyfriend", on the logically titled "Fucking Boyfriend". I would have recommended this song to be dropped from the album, it's abrasive and unneccesary. "I Hate Camera" has all the potential of being a smooth summer jam for a road trip. It's cheerful and very pleasant. "Birds and the Bees" has an almost Astrud Gilberto feel to it, very airy and easy going.

This album is just different enough that it stands out from the crowd. The Bird and the Bee may end up being a favorite by many.
