With a steely, trebbly Metal Circus-era Husker guitar sound, and the vocals further back in the mix, Furze immediately stands out among black metal bands. Their harsh drone is hypnotic and powerful, and full of raw power all the way. Iggy would love it.
The record is broken up into two sections of four tracks each. “Beneath The Odd-Edge Sounds To the Twilight Contract of the Black Fascist” section starts of with the amazing “A Life About My Sabbath” whose chainsaw guitars set the stage for all sorts of sonic bludgeoning. Equally sick is “Beneath The Wings of the Black Vomit Above,” as HEAVY a track as your likely to hear. Bust this one out to high school friends who think Korn are the balls, and watch their suburban worldview fill their shorts.

Section two, “The Wealth of The Penetration in The Abstract Paradigms of Satan” is no less frantic, with the instrumental “Mandragora Officinarum” a nice lead-in to, aside from the opener, the best track on the record, “Goatbreath.” Yes sir, I do sometimes find it hard to write these titles with a straight face, and there is something genuinely disturbing about knowing that many in the Norwegian underground metal scene take all this mythical evil stuff seriously. Isn’t there at least enough sunlight in Scandinavia to have a beer, grab an ass and smile smile smile?
Nevertheless, solid, powerful rock is solid powerful rock, no matter the outer trappings (see Sweet, Residents, etc). Furze are the real deal, and they manage to infuse even the more tiresome aspects of devil’s-gonna-git-ya poetry with true creep. A winner.
