It seems like Ten Foot Pole has always got the short end of the stick (pun intended). They have now been on the punk scene for a number of years and they recently found themselves label-less after their contract with Epitaph expired. Now they have the fine folks at Victory looking out for them. Bad Mother Trucker is not a revelationary album by any means but one thing that you can count on with Ten Foot Pole is entertaining power punk. They know how to write a melody and wrap witty lyrics around it without effort. The reason that they took so long to come up with this album is that tragedy struck the band. Their bassist, Leigh Lawson passed away suddenly in August of 2000 from a heart condition. The band took a break to recover and regroup. Wit was not lost in the whole scenario. Some of the songs here are their best ever, like “Armchair Quarterback and their tribute to the maritime province “Nova Scotia (“Nova Scotia’s so damn cold yeah / I moved here to give her space / Drinking Stoli to kill my memory / There’s not enough to lose her face). So while Bad Mother Trucker doesn’t break down any new doors for Ten Foot Pole, it does prove that they are one of the masters of melodic punk rock.
