My first impression of Piebald was that it's not something I would expect from Side One Dummy, Seeing that the label seems to stay on the punk side of things. But they made a smart move signing this band. At first, the lyrical content seemed that it wasn’t too well thought out and somewhat immature, but it turns out that it is one of the things that makes Piebald interesting. Not only does front man Andrew Bonner pour out his heart on every track, he says what he means (in his own round-about way) without being too obvious about things. And I admit, it is very cryptic at times, but it made me pay attention. And it is a rare thing for a band to try such a ballsy move in a society were people want things to come easily. Every song on this release sounds different, but sonically the album flows very well. As with most releases, listening to this straight through can get a bit monotonous. Prolonged exposure to Andrew's voice can cause you to reach for the mute button fairly quickly. But in short doses, you will be perfectly safe. As much as I have tried cant quite put my finger on the influences for this album. Imagine Say Anything, Lagwagon and Against Me, taking the best from them all and watering them down a bit and you have Piebald. Intelligent lyrics and tight musicianship make this album worth checking out.
