Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is indie music's Cinderella story. They self-made, self-released, and self-promoted their self-titled debut album and they were able to sell upwards to 200,000 copies. But after the hype about the album died down, people began accusing the band of being overrated. Those accusations may continue with the bands return with Some Loud Thunder. One similarity between this and the band's original is the very strange and out of place opener. It serves as an intro, but whatever good that was in the track was killed by the over-distorted drum. But the rest of the songs on the album don't get that extreme. However, a song like "Goodbye to Mother and the Cove" displays the bands main problems on the album. A song like this builds and builds forever and it never goes anywhere. It's repetitive and gets old after awhile. It's starts off just fine but since the song never finds a foothold, it fails. And songs like "Five Easy Pieces" seem to show that the band's more interested in getting as many strange sounds in a song than actually making it a quality tune. But all's not bad on this album. The demonic dance number "Satan Said Dance" is a fine song and is nicely paced to keep you interested throughout. The simple but lovable "Arm and Hammer" is a short and sweet song with addictive lyrics. And the most structured and well-done song on the album, "Yankee Go Home", displays a catchy vocal melody, a Broadwayesque build-up and a fantastic chorus. So overall, it's a nice collection of songs and the album does grow on you. If you've become a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah fan and you don't get annoyed with Alec Ounsworth‘s unique voice, then you should check this CD out. It may not be the debut album everyone loved so much, but it's still an enjoyable record that I’m sure will catch on.

Definitely an improvement over their debut. Clap Your Hands play a nice, upbeat brand of indie rock that incorporates surf-rock grooves and some electronic splashes for good measure and better atmosphere. I love this guy's vocals, Alec Ounsworth. Sounds like a Beach Boys outcast. Plenty of excellent material throughout, but the closing track "Five Easy Steps" hits the hardest; Alec's vocal delivery, soaring and potent, stretches to the heavens and onward. Solid, solid album, among the top 15% released this year.

Ha, someone actually stuck their neck out on this one. Good work Matt. I haven't heard it yet so the score is going to echo your's. Once I've heard it (if I even do) then I'll adjust. Nice review for your first editorial.
