Smart Metal may sound either like an onxymoron or the title of a cyberpunk novel, but no, here I’ll use it to describe Dawnbringer, whose crunchy riffs and growling vocals are sweetened by surprising chord changes and odd, almost fusion-type solos that pop when you least expect them. Yes, yes, you can still bang your head to it, but they serve notice that when they bang theirs, there are brains inside them.
Basically the band is Chris Black, who does all the drumming, vocals and bass, and brings in killer session guitarists to connect the dots. His plan works to perfection here.
“Scream and Run,” “Under No Flag,” “ Endless Guilt” and others rock with brutal and smart anger, like Rage but also like Helmet should have sounded. This is the band’s first release on a label that may actually support them, so look out. Black knows his thrash and writes with a righteous fever; let’s see a tour
