Sol.iLLaquists of Sound:(SOS): 1. A play on words describing an individual whose efforts in searching for one's self reveal his/her soul to an audience often through some type of art medium. 2. One who recognizes his/her self and the reflection of self in those around them. Cited from Nonsense Records - Artists - Sol.Illaquists of Sound.

Sol.iLLaquists of Sound’s excursion with political agitator of hip-hop Sage Francis in 2005, unlocked fans into a new realm of dimension. Me being one of them! With wide open eyes, minus the alcohol, I must admit that the show definitely kept my attention from start to end. I was not sure what to expect from a group coming out with two females. For me, I am not too fond of females in hip-hop, but my expectations were changed when their mouths opened, and I heard what came out.

Alexandrah reached out to me with her emphasis on acuity for lyrics, as well as vocals. Her voice, jazzy and soulful latches onto the beat and accents it with intensity, creating a mental illusion for the listener. The illusion…a presentation of real life and all it has to offer. Tonya Combs’ singing is a representation of her poetry and her message is clearly artistic, straying the listener towards truth. Lead emcee and polyrythmatician (as he likes to be called) for SOS, Swamburger, has speedy belligerence. He sends lyrics straight to your mind leaving you stunned and thinking about many issues. And last but not least, DiViNCi, the one responsible for wrapping up all the voices and lyrics with the music. I feel that he uses his drum machines as art, and can elaborate any sound at any layer of hip hop, jazz, and even electronic genres. This guy’s elaborate understanding of producing sound blows me away.

On this album “As If We Existed”, each song relays a different message. The record is a “profound testament” cited from anti.com. This album is a fresh new start in combining many grounds and expectations of hip hop, also adding expansions beyond simplicity. These four create a conscious utterance to accomplish harmony, and in its finest symmetry!

I just gave As If We Existed a good listen and damn, this album is hot. If you are into underground hip hop then you definitely need to find this album. The crew in Sol.illaquists Of Sound really provide us with a fresh look, both rhymes as well as beats. There is a message of unity here as well. Don't let this one slip by. Brian, you need to check this one out too.
