Having never been a die-hard Sleater-Kinney fan, this review may be a little bit left of center but here it goes. One Beat is a great album! It’s one of those albums that took me a couple of listens to fully appreciate but in the end I found One Beat to be quite an impressive album. Corin Tucker’s vocals used to kind of grate on my nerves but here she may have honed those vocals a bit. She still sort of reminds me of a ravaged Grace Slick. Carrie also takes more singing roles too with much success. There is no denying that Sleater-Kinney is a powerful all woman band with strong playing and even stronger songwriting in tow. Songs are catchy and within a couple of listens you find yourself singing along to the choruses. Even though they are all female, there are no feminist views in their songs (maybe the odd one). They are written for a big slab of fun. That’s what these three girls are after, a good time. One Beat works for this uninitiated fan so I’m sure that current fans will enjoy this installation of Sleater-Kinney’s catalog.
