It really seems as though people in punk are reaching back to the past in order to recreate where punk is going. More and more we are seeing retro punk outfits that rock hard as if what they are doing is totally original. The newest band in this category is Burlington’s River City Rebels. They burst out onto the scene in 2000 to an unsuspecting audience backed by the powerful Victory label and have just released their awesome follow-up. They borrow a lot from classic punk but also take lessons from fellow punkers, Rancid. They incorporate horns but don’t just toss them off as a ska band because their sound is so much more than that. It has a fun rockabilly feel to it but more of a fun punky edge to it. It is really hard to explain. The energy the band is really invigorating and the songs are written very well. They do have a bit more maturing and soul searching to do before they pull off the album that they have the potential of recording. River City Rebels are a great addition to any punk collection.
