After the release of In A Cave and the subsequent tour, James Canty and Jerry Busher decided to add a permanent third player in French Toast. The player chosen was Ben Gilligan from Small Doses and one listen to Ingleside Terrace reveals that this was the right decision. French Toast manages to come across a little thicker and a little more diverse on their sophomore album, Ingleside Terrace.
On the first track, "The Letter", the band recalls an older pop sound, around the era of the Feelies or The Flamin' Groovies. It seems they kind of have this older feel in their back pocket for the entire Ingleside Terrace ("U.S.S.B.S" is another one of these). There is a good fusion of this older alt.pop sound and the post-hardcore sound that James Canty and Jerry Busher are so rooted in. And then strangely enough we get almost a Nick Cave feel on "Settle In", maybe even closer to a Frank Black vibe. With "Take Me All The Way" you get a true old school punk sound. And probably the most current sound has to be the closing track, "Fork In The Road" where they go for a DFA electronic sound.
Some may run away with amount of diversity on Ingleside Terrace but I really enjoyed it. A bit of everything but still maintaining cohesiveness throughout the project.
