With two untitled tracks recorded in the Italian alps, My Cat is an Alien’s new release might, in lesser hands, be a pretentious prog-fest. But rest assured, the duo is again in fine form, though the listener is in for a challenge. Post-rock meets the operatic here, with sheets of noise and ambient wash ebbing into an almost half-hour of silence, which, if you are still with it, rewards you on the other side with a dramatic finish, Maurizio Opalio’s guitar providing just enough blurt amid the beauty of the rising dramatic surge to save it from the trite.
Spiritual? Yes. Irritating? Sometimes, especially during the quiet times when often the only music you hear is sound of your own impatience. I’d like to think that was the point: you can’t listen to this without being engaged. Are you up for it?
