Porcupine Tree have really exceeded themselves in this one, taking the dark and profound touching route on a long, winding journey through calm, breezy fields of gold to mountains reaching as far as the stars; as is the ambition of such beautifully crafted progressive pieces like “Arriving Somewhere Not But Here” and “Deadwing” where both King Crimson’s Adrian Belew and Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt lend a hand to bring the two together. “Lazarus” feeds us a tender piano tune with soft vocal harmonization, “Halo”, “Shallow” and “Open Car” bring out the heavy metal crunch and emphasize bass for a real authentic taste of prog rock, “Glass Arm Shattering” ends the journey in a long slow descent back down to serenity, Steven Wilson gracing us with delicate melodies all the way. There are a few I haven’t mentioned, but it all pieces together to form another beautiful psychedelic trip across the airwaves.
