Matt Keating has put out his share of good albums, probably the pinnacle being 1997's Killjoy. But seemingly foretelling his future, Alias went under shortly after Killjoy's release ending up in very little push for a great album. He released a decent album called Tiltawhirl and was starting to lean a little towards the country side of his songwriting. On his latest album, Summer Tonight, Matt takes a leap full-on into the roots territory and comes up smelling like roses. Or at least like Gram Parsons in a rose ladened cowboy shirt. He uses his wife, Emily Spray, to be his Emmylou Harris and to great effect. Try the title track for a perfect example of the effect his wife can have on you. He still has some upbeat tracks like "Waiting For Memories", a nice bouncy folk track. His band is sounding top notch here as well. The songs are so well written showing that Keating is getting to be an ace with the art. The honest "Somebody" rings out as my favorite of the set. The lovely Patty Griffin helps out with the album closer "No Do Without", yet another great track in this set. Another great feature of Summer Tonight is the production. Matt has somehow got the most crystal clear sound on this album. It makes it that much more professional. Summer Tonight is one of those albums that you should try and track down.
