Members of Swinging Utters release this second record as Bastards, with a crunchy mix of punk, power pop and drunken Celtic folk that isn’t quite ready to blow anyone away, but still is a fun listen over a few pints of Beamish. The party atmosphere is set by “That’s Life” and “Neverkind”, and even the sing-along Irish melancholy of “Back of His Hand” and “Mikey Needs to Move” don’t move you, just make you wince a bit before taking another swig. Not that this is bad. There are plenty of Celtic rock wannabe bands that never rise above the Pogues cliches and suck worse than Kramer at the Laugh Factory. The Bastards rock and smirk and pay a little debt to the Old Sod. This is fun, and doesn’t really attempt to be more than that. Cheers, and up the Rebel Army
