Frenemies - Birds In High School
Frenemies is the solo project of Oxes’ drummer Chris Freeland, who boils a nice stew of broody folk, psych and minimal trip-hop. Songs like “Jewel’s Summer” and “Turned Around” shimmer musically as they lyrically reflect on the mundane. “Moving Day” rocks respectively, while the funky groove of “Step 1” gives Freeland a chance to show off his rhythmic chops. Along with “ Everybody Wants a Piece of You” and the great “ Love Thy Enemy”, Birds features odes to chronic illness, sports, having goals, and disastrous but funky relationships. With a sharp eye for the awkward and grand, Freeland pays attention with eyes and with ears. This is a record and a career worth paying attention to as well.
