Converge - No Heroes
I have to say that I think Converge just might be one of the heaviest hardcore bands out there right now. I remember when I first heard Converge, I thought the band's name was Jane Doe. Of course from that point forward I was more the wiser. Anyway, anytime Converge decide to drop an album you need to stand back because these things are livelier than a bar mitzvah. No Heroes is no exception to that rule. As soon as the opening guitar screeches of "Heartache" hit your ears there is no letting up for the long 40+ minutes that No Heroes last. I have no idea how Jacob Bannon is able to keep his harsh vocals up for even a song, let alone an entire album. These guys would eat Thrice up for lunch. I honestly think that Converge is the best hardcore metal act in the world. There is nobody as tight or as intense as these guys. I always make room to listen to every album that has come out since Jane Doe and they've never disappointed. There is even a guest vocal spot by Jonah Jenkins which is probably the quietest moment on No Heroes. He tones it down slightly on "Lonewolves" by taking more of a Fugazi approach to his vocals. If metal-core scares you then Converge isn't for you but if you are into intense, loud music then definitely check out No Heroes, you won't be disappointed.

At the end of this one, you should feel as if you just ran a marathon over hot coals, let out a relieved "whew!" and try to figure out just what the fuck it was that hit you across the face. How impressive is it that a band like Converge, no rookies to the hardcore scene, can continue to carry the weight that made albums like "Petitioning The Empty Sky" and "Jane Doe" such big hitters. "No Heroes" is only slightly more stream-lined in sound, so as to lessen the hardcore influence and transmutate it into metalcore, creating a bastard offspring of both that I guess youd call "hardcore metal" or "metalcorehard". "hardmetalcore" wins. Whatever you call it, it hits hard and cuts quick, rarely has the band been so sharp. One of the most heaviest releases of the year, totally backed up by great songs full of thick, sticky riffs and hooks and Bannon's typical dark poetry. I am only slightly disappointed that the band doesn't try branching out more; what little of that they did on their previous release "You Fail Me" impressed me enough to hope for more of the same. But alas, this band is hard to the core and they still wave that flag higher than most of their peers, who all seem to have gone the way of emo-influences and pop sensibilities.

Just let your head get into it. Converge is a totally intense band but they are probably one of the heaviest metal-core bands going right now. You will submit to their power, or walk away crying.
