Destroyer is a moniker that people heard quite a bit of this year. It is Dan Bejar, from The New Pornographers solo project. Wolf Parade made quite a splash too, featuring Spencer Krug. Frog Eyes was big last year, with Carey Mercer. Why do I mention all of these bands and participants? They make up Swan Lake and with three amazing songwriters in one forum you can expect some amazingly great music. That's just what you get on Beast Moans. It's a trippy ride though. Dan, Carey and Spencer head down a very psychedelic path but it's much better than one could have even hoped. Tracks like the jerkily lo-fi "The Partisan But He's Got To Know" are messy on the surface but deep down there is so much going on. I would expect something like this from maybe an Asthmatic Kitty artist. "The Freedom" sounds like something the Shins would have done. I couldn't believe that I could listen to "City Calls". It just feels like things are falling apart because there are too many things going on. But it works, it holds up. Beast Moans is a trippy affair but if you like any bands that these guys are associated with (The New Pornographers included) then Swan Lake might just make you smile.
