Five years in the making, this release by Tim Foljahn covers familiar territory, but that’s fine since that territory continues to be among the most compelling personal visions in contemporary music. Gorgeous sound textures and lyrics that explore loss and guilt while never slipping into pathos, Foljahn’s songs approach you quietly and then hit you with raw humanity that forces you to here what he is saying, and not turn away. Songs like “ Swamp Girl” and “The Wear and Tear of Fear” are too hardcore to avoid anyway. There is humor here, too, as in “Wide Load” and “The Wild Night”, so all is not a tutorial on the heart’s war with the outside world. Like Cohen, or Nick Cave, Foljahn walks you lazily into the meat of the matter, but winks at you while opening your eyes. This guitar driven, ambient-laced classic will haunt you not only for days after you listen, but while you’re listening.
