Though I miss Bill Hicks more, I’d feel safer about life in America today if Frank Zappa were still around to comment on it. This latest round of Right Wing voodoo is the first without a major voice of opposition in music. Sure there is still Neil Young, and Dixie Chicks, but that can’t compare to the number of those who defied Nixon, or hardcore’s response to Reagan. That said, you certainly need this Mother’s debut. Its sound collage was revolutionary, and Zappa’s biting lyrics were even more explicit that Dylan in their indictment of, well, everyone. “Help, I’m A Rock”, “Who Are The Brain Police?” “Trouble Comin’ Everyday” “It Can’t Happen Here” and many more attest to Zappa’a vision and fearlessness.
