This isn't the same band who released The Ugly Organ. No way, something has happened to Cursive's Tim Kasher and he's mellowed out. It's quite obvious that Tim wanted his vocals to be heard this time around so toned down are the screams. Hell, they are non-existant on Happy Hollow. It took me a long time to get this review down because I had to listen to the album over and over in order to fully digest. Don't come to Happy Hollow looking for a follow-up to Ugly Organ. No, this time around we are heading right down the indie pop route and are completely relieved of the post-rock comparisons that the Cursive of yesterday was labeled. There are sometimes when Tim gets a little loud "Bad Science" but nothing with actual screams. When you follow up a track like that with a song like "Into The Fold" you have to wonder if touring with The Cure had some effect on Kasher's songwriting. It's gentle and lilting, and frankly, quite lovely. I always have a hard time when a band changes this much, even though I always say a band needs to change. But, it just requires more work on my end as a critic. I think Cursive needs to be proud of Happy Hollow. It's a nice album and a very new direction for the band. This album is a part of my adolescence now. Every time I listen through it again I am flooded with the same emotions I experienced the very first time I listened to them, years ago. I can really relate to their music, it touches on my own secular feelings. Definetely worth a listen if you enjoy very interesting and creative melodies and lyrics.

I had only listened to Bad Sects, Rise Up, and Dorothy at Forty until today. I had really liked those songs but always forgot about getting the entire album. I got it today and am thoroughly impressed. I'm excited to see what they do in their next album.

the sudden change was caused by the departure of celloist gretta cohn in 2003. they switched from cello to a horn ensemble. i think this album is genius. it is brilliantly cohesive, takes on a different form of style from any previous cursive albums, both musically and lyrically--now writing in a narrative POV--and still has the hard hitting/mellow dynamics that i love about cursive.

I changed from listening to 'Burst and Bloom', and tried to listen to 'Happy Hollow' next. While i realized the obvious change in vocal stylings, I noticed the songs still have some of the old energy within them. The previous songs had more of a hard edge to them, but these songs i'm listening to right now, arent as hard, but more electronics in the background. I do miss those screams that were in previous albums though... As stated above, this is a different direction for the band, but then again, i might have to check out past albums to see what may have sparked this sudden change.
