Some people have just let Will Oldham slip through the cracks because the man just releases so much music. I would suggest that you look at Will once again because he is making some of the best music of his career. Shortly after my personal favorite, the Superwolf project with Matt Sweeney, he releases another Bonny Prince Billy but this time he dares outshine I See A Darkness. He invited Dawn McCarthy once again to back up his well thought out vocals. I believe it is this dynamic that makes the Letting Go so easy to swallow. The album, as a whole, sounds very homey and honest. The songs go so well together, like they all tell a huge story. Will even gets slightly upbeat with the groovy "Cursed Sleep". There are some nice string arrangements that accent this song, and others. The Letting Go is an album to curl up with and listen to undisturbed.
So, if you have dismissed Mr. Oldham as a prolific eccentric then you are missing out on some of the best songwriting to come out of indie-land. My thoughts are that Letting Go will be even better over time.
