The Foetus Of A New Day Kicking
Temptation (video) High Med Low
By recommendation of one of the users on the site (see below) I decided to check in with Cradle Of Filth for their latest album. I hadn't listened to them since 2000's Midian, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So here we are with the latest album entitled Thornology and oh, what I've been missing. There is a reason that so many people follow the heavy darkness known as Cradle of Filth. These guys are intense and yet so listenable. It's funny starting an album this heavy off with a classic intro like "Under Pregnant Skies She Comes Alive". They instantly rip your head off with "Dirge Inferno" and rarely let up. Sure, these guys fit into the black metal category but they are probably the easiest to get into.
I totally enjoyed the closing track "Temptation". It's got a bit of an industrial feel, Sisters of Mercy-ish and super catchy. The female vocalist is credited to Dirty Harry, whoever that is. Use this song to get the leery to listen to Cradle of Filth.
I do have to applaud Roadrunner who use bands like Cradle of Filth, Killswitch Engage and Trivium to offset the cheesiness of Nickleback. If Nickleback can fund bands like these then there actually is a reason for their existence. Scary to think.

No offense to all of you and your fine reviews of Thornography, but there's nothing fans of metal (let alone black metal) will find here that hasn't been done before, by CoF and others. Go back a couple of albums to "Damnation And A Day" to hear what this album was supposed to be, complete with the inspiration and direction missing on "Thornography". These guys have disappointed me deeply since "Midian", where they decided to leave almost all traces of the black metal roots in favor of a watered down goth-metal approach that has as much in common with Evanescence than it does any metal band. This album has a few solid tracks but when compared to their previous work, it feels not only frivolous but damn near unnecessary.

Cradle Of Filth: Just their name strikes controversy in today's metal scene. Just one mention of them, and there's bound to be a few arguments over whether or not they're "posers" or "true". Even if they really are posers, this doesn't stop them from making some pretty rockin' tunes and some good, hard, heavy music. While I would not consider this black metal in the least, you can tell this band is influenced by it. 'Under The Huntress Moon' and 'Libertina Grimm' are both good examples of that, but the rest of the album sounds more like melodic thrash with darker lyrics. Yes, it sounds somewhat commercial. Yes, all the emo and Hot Topic dwelling kids seem to like them these days. Does this make them a bad band? Hell no. Despite the incredibly cheesy closing track, this is a damn good album and any fan of metal should buy it.

Cradle of Filth are the best black metal band around and this album has not failed to please. From The Foetus of a new day kicking with its heavy guitars to Libertina Grimm with its moody deep sound this is a must for any black metal fan.Even the cover version of Temptation (originally by Heaven 17) is cool. If your new to black metal this album and the previous release Nymphetamine should get your taste buds flowing.
