I first got into the retro country swing style of Wayne "the Train" Hancock back when the lovely "That's What Daddy Wants" came out. It knocked me on my ass. I had no idea that country swing could be done like this anymore. Now Hancock is where he belongs, on Bloodshot records, a label that respects what this type of music is all about. Tulsa is his third studio album for Bloodshot and arguably his finest since Daddy back in 1997. Listening to Tulsa you can't help but feel that you've been transported back to about 1951, smack in the middle of the Texas Swing movement. His voice is such a fit for this style of music. He can rock it or even croon slightly like Hank Williams on "Drinkin' Blues" or the beautiful ballad "Highway Bound". One of the amazing things about this album is that you swear a couple of the tracks are covers and yet they are all penned by Hancock himself. Lloyd Maines does a fantastic job behind the production board, echoes where they should be, all the different guitar sounds ringing out in the appropriate places. Tulsa is a refreshing album and one that needs to be heard to understand that this great music era still lives on today.
