Strays - Le Futur Noir
Forever living in your father's shadow. Is that what Toby Marriott of The Strays will do being the son of Steve Marriot (Humble Pie/Small Faces)? I am guessing that once you hear Le Futur Noir you will agree with me that Toby has nothing to worry about. It's been a while since I've been impressed with anything on TVT but this debut album is impressive. The band isn't all that original but they are good at just4rocking out. Their music is that fine line between good rock and punk. It's not quite edgy enough to warrant a punk label though. But damn, The Strays know how to have a good time. On the second track, "Block Alarm", they pump out one of the catchiest tracks I've heard this year. "You Are The Evolution" is one of the loudest Oasis songs they never wrote. It's got a great sing-along chorus as well. "This Is Forever" and "Let Down Girls" sound a little like the Gang of Four dance-punk that was yesterday's flavor. The latter would be perfect radio-fare. While The Strays don't bring anything new to the table, they are refined and it is hard to believe Le Futur Noir is their debut.
