Tropicalia: A Brazilian Revolution In Sound was not an easy compilation to find. Special order after special order seem to fail so I finally bought it online. Previous to this compilation my exposure to Tropicalia, the mixture of Brazilian with psychedelia was pretty much limited to Caetano Veloso with a few other artists thrown in from time to time. If you were like me, needing more knowledge about the genre then this compilation is for you. There are 20 tracks on this album with contributors ranging from Veloso to the most psychedelic Os Mutantes. Gal Costa is here along with some others like Jorge Ben, Tom Ze and Gilberto Gil. All of this music is from the late 60s and it is only now where it is getting exposure outside of South America. It is a known fact that artists like Beck have used a tropicalia feel on occasion. When you listen to the likes of "Alfomega" you can totally hear where that comes from. Included is my favorite Caetano Veloso song "Irene". I can't imagine anyone not liking this wonderfully upbeat track. Is this the first time a recorded "flaw", where they had to restart, was released? This album deserves to be heard. It will give you a brief history lesson of Tropicalia and most involved.
