This is a compilation of tunes made to be played on the Buddha Machine, a tiny plastic radio that plays sutras until its Double A’s wear out, that is apparently popular in Asia. The idea was to riff off the usual spiritual drones from the box and loop and twist them into something new and groovy. It works. SunnO)), Aki Onda, Sun City Girls and Blixa Bargeld contribute, along with lesser-knowns such as Minit, Alog and Gundrun Gut. The result from this collection of nine sutra loops that each of the artists had at their disposal to work with is a slow droning, trip-hoppy mix tape for your meditation of your car trip to the liquor store. Buddha would have wanted it that way. The highlight is the funny and oddly endearing “ Buddha Machine Commercial” by Jan Jelinek, Andrew Pekler and Hanno Leightmann. As far as comps go, this is a pretty seamless ride, with all 15 artists bringing their A-game to produce a mini-masterpiece.
