When 4hero's Two Pages album came out, I fell for it big-time. I listened to it over and over and still reach for it on occasion but while Two Pages was great, Parallel Universe just has that timeless quality about it. The 4 Hero duo managed to pull of the template for soulful jungle music. There were a few people who successfully did this but unfortunately the "next-big-thing" never happened with the genre.
Parallel Universe is ushered in with a beautiful track called "Universal Love", with diva-like vocals escorting the beats in without ever becoming an earful. A little harding hitting is the second track, "No Imitation", again, proving that Dego and Marc Mac were really on top of the jungle sound. The song is over five minutes but changes up enough so boredom never succumbs. In fact, most of the songs on Parallel Universe are over the 5 minute mark, pushing the album over an hour in length. But every minute is well spent.
Even if you are just curious about the jungle music of yesteryear then check out 4 Hero's Parallel Universe. It will give you a glimpse of what jungle was striving for back in the mid-90s. Follow up with Goldie's Timeless and Roni Size's New Forms.
