Hezekiah Jones is the moniker of Philly songwriter Raphael Cutrufello, who fills the empty spaces in his somber acoustic folks with whispers and ghosts and other creaking sounds, suggesting a sense of menace that his guitar holds off gracefully. Like Oldham, Cohen, some Gira, he plays with folk chords and melodies, guiding them all inward with his impressionistic writing. “Agnes of the World” tallies missed and mixed messages between lovers, and that sort of almost-communication gives power and extra meaning to “ How You Feel About Travelling” and “Postopone.” The strongest tracks, “Just Because It’s Quiet Doesn’t Mean There’s Peace” and “Which Side Are you On?” end the record with the grace that comes from learning to accept that there may be no answers to the questions we obsess about the most. Gentle, eerie and moving, Says You’re A-OK proves again that Hezekiah Jones is a place Cutrufello can work wonders with a guitar and a few naked investigations into how people treat one another.
