Mineral - The Power Of Failing
I would like to state a theory, between Braid's Frame and Canvas (1998) and Mineral's The Power Of Failing (1997) created the emo genre. Sure, Jeremy Enigk's Sunny Day Real Estate had a big part in it with Diary back in 1994 but they didn't have the edge that the other two bands had. I'm sure you could pick a couple more bands to throw in there but The Power Of Failing needs to be mentioned when you are talking of the roots of emo. This band was so powerful in the melodic and yet very heavy brand of punk. I think "Gloria" is probably the biggest highlight on the album but this is the sort of album where you need the whole thing in order to understand. There are so many better bands out there today but you can hear honest pain in "Dolorosa". The band manages to come up with such an honest and sincere album even if the vocals are indeed off key in a few areas. While the bands that former Mineral members started after this brief moment in time haven't been quite as influential (Pop Unknown and The Gloria Record) they are still worth checking out. Gloria Record in particular.
