If the idea of a reggae/ska band from Montreal strikes your tin ear like rap from Iowa, let One Night Band grease your gears. “Crazy” and the title track start off the set with authority, a strong rhythm section driving convincing slow jams. “So Low” and “Houdini” incorporate Hammond organ and horns to the jaunty mix. Reverb is king on “When I Fall in Love”, injecting life into that old hag of a tune. There are even a couple of French tunes that work as well; rather than blow the deal as novelty detours, “Interlude” and “ Le Monde a Nos Pieds”are seductive as any dancehall. One night Band blends a true grasp of Reggae with a sense of fun and makes you dance with a loose, joyous groove. Way Back Home will please both fans of the genre and Canadians, who now have yet another band to be proud of.
