Halifax Pier is a band whose album I've had in my review pile for 5 years. Yes, it's actually been in the pile for 5 years and I have never gotten a chance to listen to it. Now why I haven't gotten rid of it is beyond me. There was something about the album cover that kept me curious enough to keep it sitting around my huge piles. And I found it actually worth the wait. The music that this Kentucky band plays is very laid back and gentle. You might think of it as chamber pop but even more melancholic that the likes of Matt Pond PA. There is probably more in common with someone like Dirty Three with all the string instruments taking effect. If you are already depressed this might not be the album you should reach for, unless you feel like dwelling in the depression for a bit longer. Arrangements are well organized with a lot of depth to them. The strings are a nice addition on tracks like "Passing". I'm not even sure if the band is still functional. Regardless, they have left us a great album in Put Your Gloves on and Wave.
