I think most people know that it was Pete Townsend that was the brains behind The Who. But a lot of people don't know his solo material. In 2005 Universal Chronicles released a very complete compilation for those who have never really paid attention to Pete's solo career. It is a double disc with a whopping 34 tracks of pure Townsend. Hopefully most people know his charting "Let My Love Open The Door". That's a good place to start. Anyway, there are plenty of other great tracks on Gold as well. We are also presented with a much broader songwriter here. While rock is still the primary focus we are presented with something that occasionally hits the folk side of things. While Daltry was the primary voice of the Who, this collection also shows that Townsend is quite capable as well. One of my favorite gems is "Sheraton Gibson" that borders on the John Prine territory but still manages to rock pretty good. The songwriting here is amazing but I think that the production on all of these songs needs to be highlighted as well. Pete has a knack for getting it right in the studio as well. Some of the tracks get very Broadway like "Street In The City" but still are worth a glance. Townsend is one of yesterday's golden songwriters and if you have heard all the Who material, it's time to start in on Gold.
