The Aggrolites play fun reggae and ska, with just enough of a Studio One raw bite to keep the party from getting too silly. Hell, even King Tubby would be proud of the echo on "The Volcano."? Formed as a one-off for a possible recording gig with Rocksteady legend Derrick Morgan, the band continued on its way to SoCal greatness with their debut, Dirty reggae. This, thier first for Hellcat, showcases their mastery of the style, without being too reverent. "Heavier Than Lead" and "Death at Ten Paces"? is as solid a Kingston beat as any white band this side of the Clash can manage, and their chops are such, particularly organist Roger Rivas and bassist J. Bonner, that one can dispense with the racial qualifications right here. This is a solid rocksteady band, whose chance backing of a reggae legend gave them the juice to go their own way. The Aggrolites will show up on a lot of best-of lists this year, and on more than a few stereos where the parties don't suck.
